"Showing Jessica a Good Time"

Woody and his wife, Jessica, are in Charleston for a one-day visit. The couple is traveling in a government car because Woody is there on business. His wife is simply a tourist.

After a walking tour of The Market, the couple goes back to their parked car. As they get ready to pull out they hear the sound of an approaching siren.

Woody looks into the rear-view mirror and sees nothing. They look in all directions. Still, nothing. So they pull out and head for The Battery where they plan to have a picnic lunch.

But as they drive along, they keep hearing a siren. Woody slows down and pulls as far to the right as he can. Other traffic stops. Merchants come out of their stores to see what’s going on.

The couple is near the end of Bay Street when a horse pulling a tourist carriage reacts to the sound of the siren. Suddenly, Woody gets it. “It’s us!” he says. “It’s our siren!”

“What do you mean, ‘us,’ ” says Jessica, “It’s your car.”

I guess I forgot to mention that Woody is a cop. His unmarked police car is fully equipped with a radio, plus a siren and blue lights mounted behind the grill. The blue lights are not on, but the siren sure is.

Woody hardly ever uses the siren. Its toggle switch is under the dashboard. Woody thinks Jessica may have flipped the switch with her knee as she got back into the car.

Jessica is embarrassed by the incident. But after the horse calms down and traffic gets back to normal, she looks at her husband and says: “You sure do know how to show a girl a good time.”
