"Feral Fridays"

Nigel is a 33-year-old computer technician. On this day in Sydney, Australia, it’s "Feral Friday."

"Feral" means "wild; beastlike; savage." This is an accurate description, because "Feral Friday" is a day of heavy, competitive drinking in a local hotel bar.

There’s only one rule: drink whatever alcoholic beverage you like, but do it within 100 minutes. Based on a sliding scale, each beer counts as one point with higher points assigned for the harder stuff. Some drinks have point values as high as eight.

Cutting to the chase, Nigel wins today’s competition with a grand total of more than 200 points. Nobody else is even close. Is Nigel still standing at the end of the competition? We’ll get to that in a minute.

During the one hour and 40 minute competition, Nigel drinks 34 beers, four shots of bourbon, and 17 shots of tequila. That’s enough to bring a full-sized buffalo to its knees.

According to police, the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed by Nigel is enough to raise his blood alcohol level to 0.41 percent or higher. That’s more than eight times the 0.05 percent legal limit for driving while intoxicated in Australia.

In the coroner’s toxicology report, Nigel’s blood alcohol level isn’t quite as high as it could have been. A forensic pharmacologist said his level is only 0.353 percent. That’s because he got sick and "slightly emptied his stomach" before falling on his face.

Some of Nigel’s mates carry the unconscious techie back to his computer workstation to "sleep it off."

The alcoholic beverage commission orders the hotel to pay a fine of more than $13,000 (U.S. equivilent) for "failing to intervene" in the fatal incident.

Nigel, of course, pays the ultimate price.

We understand that "Feral Fridays" are still observed along Australia’s southeast coastal area, but the competition has been moved to another hotel bar.
