"Night On The Town"

The Blount County (TN) deputy sheriff spots a car traveling erratically along U.S. 411 near Maryville early Sunday morning. The deputy activates his blue lights and siren, signaling the driver to pull over.

Eventually, Kevin does pull over as instructed. But just as he comes almost to a stop, he floors the gas pedal of the Dodge Intrepid, spins around and heads off in the opposite direction.

Now things have gotten serious. The deputy calls headquarters and reports a high-speed chase on U.S. 411. "In pursuit of a suspected drunk driver." Within minutes, two other deputy sheriff patrol cars have joined the chase.

The 911 operator receives a call from a man claiming to be the driver of the Intrepid. "Now there's three of them behind me and I'm getting nervous," says Kevin to the emergency operator.

"Just slow down and pull off the road," says the 911 operator, "the officers will help you."

"You don't understand," says Kevin, "I can't stop - I've got to get to Vonore. But those guys'll put me in jail." Vonore is a small town near Maryville.

The 911 operator insists that Kevin pull over and surrender to deputies.

"You don't understand, ma'am," says Kevin, "you're just making things worse! Tell those cops to back off and leave me the heck alone," yells Kevin, and he throws his cell phone out the car window.

Next Kevin knocks down a row of mailboxes along the roadside. Then he bumps a deputy's patrol car.

The shift supervisor comes on the radio and gives the deputies new instructions.

They force Kevin off the road. He's handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car and taken to the emergency room for treatment of minor cuts and bruises.

Kevin is charged with vehicular assault, drunken driving, felony reckless endangerment, and felony evading arrest.

Turns out Kevin was trying to get to his girlfriend's apartment in Vonore. She'll have to wait a while.
