"Hold It Right There And Say 'Cheese'"
Gordy and Swan climb onto the roof of a row of shops in a strip mall and manage to pry open the lid from one of the ventilators. That makes a fairly easy access to the camera shop below.
The two young guys help themselves to the money in both cash registers. Then they begin experimenting with some of the shop’s state-of-the-art electronics.
The next day, police investigate soon after the owner reports the crime. Within a day both boys are in jail charged with burglary. They, of course, deny having any knowledge of the break-in. Gordy says he spent the night at his mother’s house watching television. He claims his buddy, Swan, was with him at his mother’s all night long.
The boys think they’ve outwitted the cops with their phony alibi — until a detective shows them some snapshots. The pictures were taken in the camera shop and there was a date and time stamp recorded in the file of each of the digital pictures.
It seems the boys took their own photographs while clowning around during the burglary. Gordy was familiar enough with digital cameras that he held the camera at arm’s length and aimed it toward himself and his pal, Swan.
When a detective spreads the series of pictures on the table in the interview room, Gordy is startled. "You can’t go around taking pictures of people like that. It’s an invasion of my privacy. I’ll sue the whole police department."
Swan, on the other hand, is amazed at the same set of pictures. "These are the pictures Gordy took. Hey, they came out real nice and sharp, didn’t they?" Swan comments
A detective smiles as he hands Swan a statement form on which to write his confession. "Yes, they’re excellent pictures," says the detective. "After we show them to the judge I may just hang them on the wall in my office. You guys are some of the best photographers I’ve ever seen."
