"The Case of the Aging Pole Vaulter"
Two uniformed cops arrive at an apartment complex looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a series of burglaries. They climb the stairs to the second floor, then down the hallway to apartment 218. They knock. No answer. They knock again, this time one cop puts his ear to the door listening for any sound of movement inside the apartment.
The cops are just about ready to leave when they hear a "thud" sound coming from outside the apartment building. "Bet that’s our boy," says one of the cops as the two officers race down the hallway and into the stairwell.
Outside they find Otis sprawled out on the grass, writhing in pain. The cops make a quick check and, sure enough, he’s got a compound fracture of one of the small bones in his right leg.
The guy’s in too much pain to talk, so the cops wait for the ambulance. One cop rides in the back of the rig with the patient. The partner goes back to the patrol car and runs the guy’s name through headquarters for any possible warrants.
Not surprisingly, they get a "hit" on Otis. No, he’s not the guy they had a burglary warrant for in apartment 218. But yes indeed Otis is wanted — for armed robbery and check forgery.
After the cops are able to interview Otis they find out he heard the knock on the door back at the apartment. The knock was at the door of number 218. Otis lives in 216, right next door to the burglary dude.
As fate would have it, Otis thought the cops were looking for him, so he opened a window and took a giant leap over the hedges.
"I really thought I could make it," Otis said to the cops, "it was only 12 feet or so, and I used to do the pole vault back in high school."
"Too bad," says one of the cops. "You’re not the guy we were looking for. Congratulations, anyway."
