"You Can Only Hide For So Long"
Brody is Chief of Police in Jefferson where he has served on the local police force for 20 years. Twice during his service Brody was cited as "Police Officer of the Year." He also served two terms on town council while he was still a slick-sleeved patrolman.
Now it’s two days before Brody’s retirement. A special cake is ordered from the town bakery and enough ice cream to serve nearly everybody in town.
Chief Brody is excited. He’s already got tickets for two on a cruise ship to some exotic place. Two more days of running shifts, doing paper work and handling complaints and he’ll be a free man for the rest of his life. Maybe not!
This same day two state police officers arrive in Jefferson on a special assignment. They have a piece of paper that will forever change Brody’s life.
These officers have an arrest warrant for Chief Brody charging him with "escape." According to investigative reports, Brody was arrested some 25 years ago for a series of robberies. He was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to six years in prison. He served two of those years before he escaped. That was the last officials heard of Brody — until now.
How did he get hired on the police force? Partly he was able to fake letters of recommendation and other critical documents. What about a fingerprint check? The former Chief, now retired, said he thought the Town Clerk sent Brody’s fingerprint card to the FBI. The Town Clerk said he thought the Chief sent the prints. Truth is — nobody did it.
So how did Brody finally get caught? Nobody’s taking the blame or the credit, but the rumor is that with all the heightened security since 9/11, even cops currently employed may be double-checked.
What happens to Chief Brody now? Well, the retirement party is cancelled and Brody’s wife is trying to get a refund from the cruise line.
And, yes, Brody will have to go back to his home state to serve the balance of his sentence, plus some extra time for escape.
