"Is This Some Kind Of Halloween Gag?"

Ledford and O’dell have not worked at regular jobs since getting out of prison two years ago. They served time for burglary, a crime they specialized in since dropping out of high school.

Now they’re planned a break-in which they consider "stone easy." There are six condominiums in a building with a basement for storage bins. Ledford finds the door to the basement has a simple padlock. "We can get in with a screwdriver," Ledford tells his cohort.

It’s after midnight when the two misfits park their car several blocks from the condo building. O’dell checks the basement door and opens it with a screwdriver.

Inside there are six bins. All the bins are secured with cheap locks. O’dell breaks each of the locks with a small tack hammer.

Sifting though the lockers, the guys find mostly junk. There’s a painting that looks like it was done by one of the old masters. Actually, it’s a paint-by-numbers done by a student, but these guys can’t tell the difference.

Then O’dell opens a small trunk. He screams, turns and runs out of the building, leaving Ledford wondering what’s going on. Ledford shines his flashlight on the trunk, pulls the lid up — he too yells and runs out into the street.

Investigators have no trouble rounding up these guys. They dropped their flashlights as they ran out of the building, leaving behind ample fingerprints.

The cops are wondering what frightened these two characters of the night. What investigators find is a bit scary — the trunk contains nearly a dozen human heads.

The owner of the storage bin, a local dentist, tells the cops he keeps the mummified heads for research purposes. "Sure he does," the cops say privately. Now they’re checking on the law concerning "storage of human research materials."

In case you’re concerned about where this happened, fear not. News reports from Reuters in Europe tell us the case of the human heads collection happened last month in Vienna, Austria.
