"Selling State Secrets To The Enemy"

An American couple was arrested in Bern, Switzerland, and held incognito for three days, and then released.

The news of their arrest and release was withheld from the public record for 28 years, and only now are we finding out what happened.

The young couple — Randolph was 20 and Guinevere was 19 — were arrested in the late seventies as suspected spies.

She was employed in a sensitive industry, and he was the supposed covert salesman attempting to peddle secrets to then enemy nations including East Germany, the U.S.S.R., China, and Saudi Arabia.

During the past three decades there have been few details provided concerning this warrantless arrest. The couple was taken into custody by a cadre of state police and imprisoned forthwith. Intense questioning lasted for three days, after which the couple was released.

For 28 years the Swiss have kept top secret the details of this mysterious espionage case. Only now does the Swiss government admit that such an unceremonious arrest and imprisonment took place so long ago.

Why were these so-called espionage agents incarcerated?

Guinevere worked at a job where she had access to what was then considered a state secret.

Randolph, the young woman’s boyfriend, was known to have made contact with agents from Russia, China, and other known enemies of the free world.

For reasons I’ve explained the couple was arrested as they slept, taken to police headquarters and grilled over a three day period.

Because Switzerland has always kept their neutrality in delicate matters of enemy nations, what secrets could this American couple be guilty of stealing?

Obviously, it was something precious to the Swiss. You’ll agree when I tell you that Guinevere worked in a chocolate factory while her boyfriend, Randolph, attempted to sell secret recipes for — Swiss Chocolate!
